A comprehensive guide to Beihai Park, one of the oldest and most beautiful imperial gardens in Beijing.
Beihai Park is one of the oldest and most beautiful imperial gardens in Beijing. It features a large lake, traditional pavilions, and the iconic White Dagoba on Jade Flower Island. It's a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city.
The park covers an area of 69 hectares, with more than half of it being water. It was first built in the 11th century during the Liao Dynasty and was expanded during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The park is known for its beautiful landscape design, which combines natural scenery with traditional Chinese architecture.
The most famous landmark in the park is the White Dagoba, a 35-meter-high Buddhist stupa located on Jade Flower Island. The island is connected to the shore by a bridge and features several pavilions and temples. The park also includes the Circular City, a small fortress-like structure with a temple dedicated to Guanyin, the goddess of mercy.
Beihai Park is best explored by following a route that takes you around the lake and to the main landmarks. Start at the Southern Gate and proceed to Jade Flower Island.
Key attractions include the White Dagoba on Jade Flower Island, the Circular City with its Guanyin Temple, the Five Dragon Pavilion along the lake shore, and the Nine-Dragon Screen, a large screen decorated with nine dragons.
Don't miss the Beihai Park Boat Ride, which allows you to enjoy the lake scenery from the water, and the Garden of Harmonious Interest, a beautiful traditional Chinese garden within the park.
